Importance of strategic plan

Alex Cullen, the Forrester VP and research director said that the planning should be up-to-the-minute. If one’s plan simply contains a list of projects, he will be certainly in trouble. He also says that if strategic plan is adapted to your business it will never go out of date.

Cullen says, “earlier, people used to make strategic plan in the way how China used to make its five year plans.” He also opines that the future strategic plans may not be very skilled because, people may do it only twice in a decade. The strategic plan can cover a five year span, but it should be more focused on first few years and should be reviewed at least twice a year. He viewed that a plan should be a process but not an event.

Michael Hites the CIO of New Mexico State University says that one with limited budget and limited resources and without a proper strategic plan, will not be succeeded. He said that such a person will not be able to keep up with the technology change, as he will not know the required changes to be followed.

A business can float without clear strategic plan but IT cannot. Blurred business goals present a challenge but smart CIO uses that as an opportunity to develop its business. Laurie Orlov, an IT consultant says that a strategic plan should have the same value, as it always has. He also said that business can be in a state of flux but it cannot be diverted completely and we can find many business objectives which depend on IT for achievement.
